Why I Became a Naturopath?

Naturopathy was not the career path I saw myself following, it found me. I went to university to study science and followed this with a teaching degree. I finally landed myself in the medical field taking blood, but while doing all this study my own health became the focus of my life.

I started suffering headaches. Everyday. All day. Whether they were just a niggle in the back of my skull or a full-blown headache radiating from the back of my head into my eyes that felt like little men with pickaxes digging in, I had one. I saw many medical professionals, including doctors, an optometrist, an ophthalmologist and finally a neurologist. Not one person could find the cause to my headaches, I was just prescribed medications to treat them.

The symptoms continued to progress, including blurred vision, numbness and pain: anywhere on the scale from 3 to 10. I was getting frustrated and the medications I was prescribed started giving me side effects including digestion and neurological problems. I was at my wits end and beginning to think it was all in my head. That I must be going crazy. That they would never figure out what was wrong.

And then, a relative suggested Naturopathy. They were beginning to study it and thought I might be interested. I love to learn and was curious about it. So, I researched and found I liked what I read. I started studying. And learning. And began to see how I could help myself.

I began to focus more on my body. I took myself off all the medications I was on (with doctor approval), even over the counter NSAIDs and listened to what my body was telling me. I changed what I was eating, made sure I drank enough water every day and continued to research. I found what could trigger headaches and continued to focus on my own health.

To this day, I still suffer from headaches. They may not be as bad as they once were, or as frequent, but I am not cured. I was finally diagnosed with visual migraines and chronic headaches at the start of this year. I have also learnt through natural ways to help control my flare ups and how to listen to what my body is telling me. I know if I don’t get enough sleep, I’ll get a headache. If I eat something different or don’t drink enough water, I’ll get a headache.

This is why I became a Naturopath. Natural medicine has helped me learn how to cope with my headaches, treat them without medications and listen to what my body is telling me. Although, I still get headaches my overall health is the best its been in two years.

Naturopathy has helped me, physically and mentally, deal with my own health issues. It could help you too.
