What is Naturopathy?

This is a question I get asked all the time. People ask me “what do you do?” and when I reply with “I am a Naturopath” it’s closely followed by “what’s that?” Naturopathy is such a foreign concept to so many people in this day and age, that I thought I would answer the question here.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is an alternative and holistic approach to health. It uses non-invasive techniques to promote health by utilising the body’s own natural healing processors. The primary focus is to promote health and prevent disease from occurring.

Naturopaths can help the body to heal and maintain an optimal level of health. This is done through herbal medicine, supplements, dietary advice and lifestyle changes. As everyone is different, a unique tailor-made treatment plan is created just for you, with what you need in the forefront of our minds. As we all know, there is no such thing as a quick fix, and the road to wellness is a long one, full of twists, turns and bumps along the way. As a Naturopath, we are with you every step of the way, through those ups and downs, to help you find the best you possible.

The Core Principles of Naturopathy

There are six core principles that define our approach to naturopathic care. These are:

  • The Healing Power of Nature

  • First Do No Harm

  • Treat the Whole Person

  • Treat the Cause

  • Naturopath as Teacher

  • Prevention

These core principles are at the centre of patient treatment in naturopathy. Using the body’s own natural healing processes to help heal the condition; doing nothing that could cause extra harm to the patient; look at the person as a whole and treat physical, emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing; finding the root of the problem rather than just the symptoms been shown; teaching the patient how to help themselves; and finally, prevent illness from occurring in the first place.

What Happens in a Naturopathic Consult?

At your first visit, we ask a variety of questions that may seem irrelevant and unconventional, but in reality, gives us a well-rounded view of your health and how each body system is working. We talk about your family history, diet, lifestyle, how you are sleeping and what is making you tear your hair out. We look at physical signs including the eyes, tongue and nails to help determine what is going on inside the body. We may also ask for more testing to help complete the picture. From there, we will discuss your goals, what you hope to achieve and how we feel we can help you get on the right track. You may get an herbal mixture, tailored to you, supplements, diet changes or lifestyle advice.

This is not a quick fix and depending on what is going on, your compliancy and how well you respond to treatment, shows how many visits you need. It could be one or two other visits or could be months down the road we have reached a place where you are healthy and happy. But just remember you are never alone on this journey, we are right there with you.
